The history behind Glampabout
Glampabout grew from decades of hands-on travel experience, including extensive RV use. For over twenty-five years, we ran Walkabout Travel Gear, relying on RV travel both as transportation and a mobile base for operations. While convenient, RVs exposed the limitations of large vehicles: high costs, ongoing maintenance, fuel consumption, and restrictive campsite sizes.
These challenges highlighted the need for a more flexible way to travel comfortably. The lessons learned from navigating RV logistics directly inspired the concept of Glampabout — offering mobility without the burdens of a traditional RV.
Walkabout Travel Gear began in 1995 during a trip to Malta and quickly evolved into an online retailer specializing in travel adapters and gear. Part of our operations involved mobile fulfillment from a motor home, allowing us to ship inventory while traveling. This innovation not only demonstrated the practical challenges of RV life but also laid the groundwork for designing portable, flexible travel solutions.
After years of experience with RV-based operations, market changes, and personal considerations, we transitioned the focus from Walkabout Travel Gear to Glampabout. The goal: create a travel model that retained all the comfort and convenience of RV life while eliminating the high cost, maintenance, and site restrictions.
Glampabout combines inflatable tents, portable power stations, powered refrigeration, and other modular gear to provide an RV-level experience without owning a large vehicle. The lessons from RV travel continue to inform product selection, setup strategies, and overall mobility.
Today, Glampabout demonstrates how practical experience with RVs, combined with decades of Walkabout Travel Gear expertise, can create a flexible, comfortable, and efficient alternative to traditional RV camping. Travelers can now enjoy a full glamping experience while maintaining mobility, reducing cost, and avoiding the complexities of managing a large vehicle.
